How to Light Up Your Kitchen With Recessed Interior Lighting

Recessed interior lighting can add a dash of whimsy, cosiness and functionality to your kitchen. You have the option of installing pendant fixtures, pot racks and chandeliers. But, recessed fixtures grant you the greatest control over the ambience you would like in your kitchen whether you are hosting guests or enjoying an intimate meal.

A light for every space
A common mistake most people make when it comes to kitchen lighting is installing a single overhead fixture hoping that it will illuminate the entire kitchen space. The result is often too much light in one area of the room and too many shadows in other areas, making it impossible to work from these darker spaces. Layered recessed interior lighting does a better job of adequately lighting up the kitchen and creating a more inviting space. A layered lighting plan can be achieved by installing:

Task lighting: This is the most important source of light in the kitchen as it provides illumination for tasks such as reading recipes and food preparation tasks. Downlights installed under the cabinet are the most ideal for task lighting.
Accent lighting: It does a wonderful job of drawing attention to special collections such as china stacked within a cabinet or bringing the spotlight to a piece of artwork.
Ambient lighting: A great way to make your kitchen more inviting is to install ambient lights especially within the space between the cabinet and the roof. Cove lights are especially cosy and create a warm, welcoming, subtle glow.

Choosing the right light combination

Different areas of the kitchen will require different intensities of light. Using lights with varied angles and intensity adds both functionality and elegance to the kitchen. For example, ambient light, which provides general illumination for the room, requires wide-angled fixtures, while task light situated beneath the counter, sink or cooker can be narrow and focused to provide acute luminosity. What makes recessed lighting so convenient is your ability to control the light source using a dimmer. Food preparation tasks will require bright lights but you can adjust the lights to softer illuminations during mealtimes or relaxing kitchen chats. Remember that task, ambient and accent lighting and even decorative lighting all require their own dimmers.
Whether you are remodelling your kitchen or you are in the middle of a new construction, we can help you choose recessed interior lights that blend style and functionality to put your kitchen in the best light.
